Tragic Father's Day Ends in Bloodshed Over Divorce Dispute

By Emmanuel Tredway • Jul 03, 2025

A Tennessee community woke up to devastating news on Father's Day — and the story behind it is even more heartbreaking than you'd expect.

A Father's Day Tragedy

On the morning of June 15, Nashville police responded to a 911 call about a shooting at a condominium. Inside, they found two bodies — Amina "Anna" Darbashi Pierce, 30, and her husband, Steven Pierce, 46. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. A revolver was discovered beneath Steven's body.

Authorities say the evidence points to a murder-suicide. According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the couple had allegedly argued about financial issues and a potential divorce before Steven fatally shot Anna and then took his own life.

A Devoted Teacher and Mom

Anna Pierce wasn't just another name in the headlines. At Hunters Lane High School, she was a fixture, working as a biology teacher and tennis coach who had just completed her seventh year at the school.

She was known for her fierce dedication to her students and her passion for education. "She enjoyed teaching biology and 9th graders because she was convinced that the relationships she built with students would help them through graduation and beyond," said Principal Dr. Sue Kessler, as reported by PEOPLE.

Anna was also a mother of two young girls. Those who knew her say she helped fellow teachers navigate the challenges of being both a parent and an educator. At the time of her death, Anna was working on her principal licensure. She had dreams of leading a school of her own one day.

No Prior Warnings

The Metro Nashville Police Department confirmed that there had been no prior domestic violence calls at the couple's condo. However, court records show that Steven Pierce had a troubling history. In a previous marriage, a woman with matching identifying information filed for divorce in 2017, citing alleged "erratic and violent behavior" toward both her and a minor child, according to the Tennessean. She also requested a restraining order during those proceedings.

Still, the lack of prior police involvement at the Pierces' home adds another layer of shock for those closest to her.

Remembering Anna

In the aftermath, tributes have poured in from students, colleagues, and community members. The Metro Nashville School District expressed its sorrow publicly, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Amina 'Anna' Darbashi Pierce," in a statement reported by PEOPLE. The district also said its thoughts and prayers were with Pierce's family.

Dr. Kessler echoed the sentiment, saying, "We will miss Ms. Pierce's commitment to kids, love of our school, and her dedication," according to PEOPLE.

As families across the country celebrated Father's Day, the Hunters Lane High School community was left reeling — not just from the loss of a teacher but from the loss of someone who clearly made a difference.
