Nudist Allegedly Butchers Neighbors Over a Dollar Dog

By Emmanuel Tredway • Jul 03, 2025

At a secluded nudist resort in the California hills, a simmering feud among neighbors took a horrifying turn. But no one could have guessed the spark that would set off one of the most gruesome cases in recent memory — a single hot dog.

A Quiet Resort With a Dark Secret

Olive Dell Ranch in Redlands, California, is a 73-year-old nudist resort nestled in Reche Canyon. It's the kind of place where everyone knows everyone — a tight-knit community with fewer than 100 residents. But that peaceful atmosphere was shattered in late August 2024.

Daniel and Stephanie Menard, a married couple in their 70s, had lived at Olive Dell for 15 years. Their quiet life was upended by growing tension with their next-door neighbor, Michael Royce Sparks. According to residents, that tension boiled over regularly, sparked by noise complaints, property disputes, and personality clashes.

But it wasn't the noisy generator or trimmed tree branches that allegedly triggered the violence. It was a hot dog.

The Incident That 'Set Him Off'

Detectives say Sparks, 62, was humiliated when Daniel Menard offered him a hot dog. He allegedly saw the gesture not as an act of kindness, but as a personal insult, a reminder of his worth being reduced to a dollar store snack.

"He said Mr. Sparks felt that the hot dog was a jab at him, making him feel like he was worth only a dollar hot dog, and that's what set him off that day," testified Redlands Detective Thomas Williams during a preliminary hearing, according to KBTX.

That moment, relayed to police by a fellow inmate, allegedly triggered the brutal attack that followed.

Sparks is accused of beating Daniel and Stephanie Menard with a rake, a hoe, and a hammer. Then, authorities say, he dragged their bodies into a homemade concrete bunker under his trailer — a space he'd constructed himself.

There, prosecutors allege, Sparks dismembered Stephanie and mutilated Daniel. Their remains were later found stuffed into black plastic bags and an orange Home Depot bucket beneath Sparks' home.

Missing Persons to Murder Investigation

The couple's friend, John Hillis, testified that he became concerned when Stephanie didn't call him for their usual Sunday church ride. When he arrived at their trailer, he found Stephanie's purse and cane still inside — signs she hadn't left voluntarily.

For four days, neighbors and police searched Olive Dell. Then, an alarming text message from Sparks to an old co-worker changed everything. "Chopped up my neighbors. Didn't know I had it in me. SNAPPED," he allegedly texted, according to Redlands Daily Facts.

Sparks barricaded himself inside his trailer, reportedly attempting suicide with a rifle before being apprehended. Authorities used a tractor to tear apart his trailer, ultimately finding him in the bunker with a long rifle that had jammed.

When asked where the Menards were, according to William's testimony reported by Redlands, "He told me they were underneath the trailer and that they didn't need any help. He replied back that they were in pieces."

A Shocking Turn in a Tight Community

Sparks, who went by "Sparky," had helped residents with construction projects and was known for his strength, including lifting bags of concrete with ease. Yet some neighbors described him as isolated and short-tempered, especially with the Menards.

Stephanie, who had muscular dystrophy, used a cane to get around. Daniel suffered from dementia. Neither would have been able to fend off an attack.

The community was left stunned. "I didn't think he'd ever be able to do something like this," resident Tammie Wilkerson said according to KBTX. "I know he didn't like them, and he didn't have a problem telling people that, but I never thought he'd do this."

Sparks has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including two counts of murder and one count of animal cruelty for allegedly drowning the Menards' dog, Cuddles, in a sink.

A judge has ruled there is enough evidence to proceed to trial.

What Happens Next?

Prosecutors have not yet said whether they'll seek the death penalty. For now, Sparks remains in custody, and the residents of Olive Dell are left to reconcile how their serene paradise became the backdrop for a gruesome double homicide.
